When Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum first went to the Supreme Court, the Justices asked the parties to answer another question on whether or not this lawsuit should  be brought to the court even though the alleged events took place in another country. The parties involved in this case are now going back to the Supreme Court to answer the previously asked question. Does the Alien Tort Statute allow people to bring lawsuits into the United States for human right abuses that occur in other countries? If the United States agrees to hear any case in which an American corporation supposedly helped in the abuse of human rights for foreign citizens, then the US could become knee-deep in lawsuits. However, if we do not hear cases involving human right abuses, then the US is indirectly helping these abuses continue. Although both sides have pros and cons, I believe that the United States should become involved in cases that affect the rights of people, any people, especially if these cases involve American corporations. Although this could cost the United States a lot of money, I believe that the rights of all people is always more important than the cost.
